Does the food to try and make the animal a Greater version need to be given in stable before they mature? Some times, it will cause trouble and sometimes it makes the trouble go away. Try it : Next time your thrall won't attack, just take a path he/she can't take. That way your thrall will teleport next to you and it should solve the problem.
